Attractions around Bedugul

Alta Vista Mountain Villa is situated in close proximity to the beautiful and scenic caldera lakes of Lake Beratan, Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan. Lake Beratan is where the popular mountain town of Bedugul lies, and where the famous Balinese Ulun Danu Temple floats elegantly on the lake. Bedugul is an attractive tourist destination with vibrant and colourful markets, quaint shops and incredible local cuisine, but spared from the excessive congestion of the south. Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan are surrounded by flower and vegetable farms and strawberry fields, with camping, fishing and boating as popular activities. Also close by is the famous world-class Handara Golf Course which draws international players.

Nearby attractions include the beautiful and peaceful Bedugul Botanic Gardens and the dramatic UNESCO heritage padi fields at Jatih Luweh, arguably the most beautiful padi fields in all of Bali. There are a number of waterfalls that provide opportunities for short or longer treks in the vicinity and the lightly trafficked mountain roads are a haven for bicycling enthusiasts. Further west is Munduk, a quaint mountain village surrounded by clove and coffee plantations, with opportunities for wonderful walks through villages and the countryside.

For those who want a dose of adrenalin, Bali Treetop Adventure Park provides fun activities set in an open air environment. Located in the Bali Botanical Gardens at Bedugul, the park also provides team building services for groups and individuals. There are 7 adventure circuits from tree to tree, with heights ranging from 2 to 20 metres. There are 72 challenges for all ages and all levels involving suspension bridges, spider nets, Tarzan jumps, flying fox, flying swings and many more fun challenges.

 

Ulun Danu Temple

Also called Lake Temple, this is situated on Lake Beratan at Bedugul and is one of the most famous, most photographed temples in all of Bali. The temple seems to float on water and its reflection in the calm lake makes one of the most attractive aspects of the view. Access is through a beautiful park with bright floral gardens which are well-groomed and well maintained. Somewhat more “touristy” are locals with exotic reptiles and animals with which you can have your photo taken.

Lake Danau Beratan

This is one of the most famous caldera lakes in Bali. Amazing scenery surrounds the lake with the mountains behind it often covered in cloud. There are many activities on and around the lake, including water sports such as parasailing, jet-ski, speed-boating, canoeing and fishing. In addition this is a terrific area for trekking.

Lakes Danau Buyan and Tamblingan

These are two other caldera lakes of a trio that includes Lake Beratan. There are many farms around Lake Buyan, which also offers water sports, boating and fishing. There are rustic campsites on the shore of Lake Buyan. Trekking is very popular here, including routes around Lake Tamblingan; to Agung Lesong; from southern side of Lake Buyan over the saddle to Lake Tamblingan; to Goa Jepang, Gunung Catur, Pura Puncak Mangu.

Candi Kuning Market

This market is located on the main road into Bedugul along Lake Beratan. It is a traditional fruit and vegetable market with a huge range of fresh and dried fruits as well as fabrics and souvenirs. It is most vibrant in the mornings, although stalls and shops remain open throughout the day. It is a colourful spectacle and worth spending some time in, perhaps sampling the luscious fruits of the area.

Botanical Gardens

These are world class gardens and a must-see for those who love plants and trees. It makes a perfect half or full day trip and offers above all else, coolness and tranquility. With some 1500 hectares of stunning walks, rainforest, conifer groves, palms, tree ferns etc. it is easily accessed from Bedugul. You can tour the gardens in your vehicle, or take an easy stroll around or if you are inclined, embark on more strenuous hiking into the jungle above the gardens. There is a stunning lookout over Lake Buyan from the very top of the gardens while lower down, you can enjoy glass green-houses and open lawn areas. There are endless picnic spots to choose from.

Angseri Hot Spring

Tucked away in a small village near the rice terraces of Jatih Luweh is a hot spring that is better known to locals than visitors. It is not salubrious but very natural. After paying a small fee at the entrance, visitors must descend several levels of terraces along rough pathways, walk alongside padi fields and descend into a valley where natural hot spring water has been piped into a large communal pool into which everyone can jump in. There are a few concrete bathing stalls with piped in hot spring water. The hot springs lie astride a small river flowing out of virgin jungle and bathers can also dip in the river. The hot spring water is reputed to have curative properties for a variety of ailments. Whether this is true or not, it is a relaxing soak in a hot spring that is not touristy and has a genuine Balinese village ambience.

Jatih Luwih Rice Terraces

This is an area that is listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site. The heritage rice terraces here are arguably the most beautiful in all of Bali. It is only a short drive from Bedugul. +From the moment you enter the site, vistas of verdant padi entice you to stop for photographs at numerous viewpoints. At the top of the road, the views are the most magnificent, with sweeping terraces backed by mountains in the north. It is possible to walk down to the padi terraces and along the bunds where you can see the irrigation system drawing water from the mountains. There are restaurants dotted about the site which have lovely views across the valley of rice terraces.

Handara Golf and Resort

Handara Golf & Resort Bali is an award-winning golf course cum resort accommodation that attracts golfers from around world. Recognized as one of Asia’s most scenic and iconic courses, it was ranked among the “Top 50 Greatest Golf Courses in The World” by Golf Magazine. Sitting at the foot of verdant hills, this golfing estate is expansive and beautiful, worth a visit even if you do not play golf. It is situated minutes from Bedugul town centre and a mere 10-15 minutes’ drive from Alta Vista Mountain Villa.

Munduk Village

Munduk and the nearby villages of Kayuputih and Banyuatis are dotted along the scenic drive of many switchbacks between Lake Buyan and Seririt on Bali's northern coast. Munduk village is strung out on both sides of a single main road, with incredible views on either side of the ridge. On one side is a lush valley of farms, padi fields, clove and coffee plantations and on the other side are views across the foothills towards the northern coast. Munduk village is the region's prime spot for watching sunrises on one side and sunsets on the other. Munduk is also a centre for trekking through myriad trails through picturesque hidden villages, forested hills, clove, cocoa and coffee plantations. The Dutch colonists used to come here as a break from the heat of Singaraja and there are remnant colonial style buildings that are now guest houses.
